Little Vikings

The Children’s' Cross-Country Ski Race "Barneløpet" is held at the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch near Winter Park, Colorado.  Participants from Colorado's Sons of Norway lodges, along with friends and family enjoy a snow filled day of skiing.  This cross country ski event for youth include the whole family: moms, dads, brothers, and sisters put on the skis a enjoyed the sunshine.

Every skier finishes a winner!  This free event features boys and girls ages three to sixteen.  It is a noncompetitive ski event for the enjoyment of children and their families.  All level of skiers are welcome and everyone wins.  Lined up at the finish line waving the flag of Norway are the parents, grandparents, and spectators cheering on the racers.  You can hear the Cow Bells ringing from miles away.

Treats are exciting refreshments!  After the race, skiers, family, and volunteers’ line up for the largest display of healthy food and treats ever seen in one place.  The reception is sponsored by the Colorado Sons of Norway lodges. They provided plenty of fruit juice, hot chocolate, and all the coffee the tired, thirsty, yet still exuberant adults can handle.

Try ski orienteering!  Jointly sponsored by Sons of Norway and the Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club, orienteering can be both challenging and fun.  Courses are mapped out for the novice and intermediate.  A full run of the course can take up to 90 minutes.  Billed as a scavenger hunt on skis, with a map, adults can participate with their children, or on their own.  The YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch has its own Nordic Center and can cater to your winter snow needs including tubing or sledding.  An instruction on orienteering is available throughout the day if one decided to give the challenge a try.
